Oooh. Let me help you out with the Outlook transfer. I have done this a couple/three times. (As a software developer, I change machines about once every two years).

After some trial and error, here's I do. Located your *.pst file (it's generally tucked into some nice out of the way place in your document and settings area, just do a search for it) on the new machine after Outlook is installed.

Delete it. (Yeah, I know it sound scary, trust me)

Copy the PST file you used on your old computer to some easy to remember place. I used my F: drive because that's where ALL my data is... makes backing up a lot easier.

Restart Outlook. It will complain it can't find your PST and offer to let you browse for it. Just locate the one you copied over.

All my email's, contact, etc are suddenly in my new machine. Sweet.

same here. outlook's just a mess to migrate. i'd stop using it altogether if i wasn't forced to use it by my mobile phone's synchronization software. :(

Oo dear, you should have a Mac, they have new Migration software from your old mac, and it doesn't miss a thing. Fantastic. PCs tend to be generally more complicated.

I've had similar nightmares with Outlook Express. What I've done most recently was to copy the Identities folder from my old hard drive to my new one. However, you don't know which identity is which because of the naming of the identities. It's a pain, but it does allow you to transfer your emails.

I think there is another method which involves the use of Personal Folders. I'm not sure if this is different for regular Outlook or for Express.

Bottom line, I feel your pain. I know it's really not funny, but I did find some amusement out of it. Misery loves company.

Have you considered using an exchange account at 1and1.com? It'll store your information on that server so you don't have to deal with outlook migration headaches.

Google apps is also a good service to use that can be really convenient (google.com/a/). You can forward your domain to it and integration is dead easy.

Outlook is a pain in the neck. Anytime I try to import anything, it usually freezes up, lots of restarting...I don't know why I even use it! But I like it so much better than webmail!

Roboform saved me a bunch of times. Since I am traveling a lot, I use different PCs. And Roboform really helps when you have a bunch of sites to log into.

I have about 10 email addresses I need to track. I know I should connect them all into one, but I'm still lazy to do so.

I just gave up on using outlook. I like to format my computer 1 once a year just to get all the bugs out and start fresh. I hated doing all the back upping so I now have an extra HD where i save all my data in and I only install software on my C drive. Oh and my outlook solution is i don't use it and use gmail or google apps if you have your own domain.

I have to agree with you about loving Roboform... I've migrated it every time I've changed primary machines. After using it for even the shortest time, it gets hard to live without if you're working on a different computer! (Move mouse up to the bar to click Roboform button, realize button is not there, mind stuck in endless loop of confusion... (lol) Can you tell that has happened to me before?!)

I buy a new computer about every 18 months so transferring files has become second-nature. Of course, I'm anal when it comes to this so I'm very careful to install software in the same way, store files using a system that makes sense to me, and use software that helps ensure the files get copied and not skipped over if they have a hiccup along the way.

One software that works very well is Vice Versa. It's purpose is to copy files securely and/or sync files between a desktop and laptop. It works great for both and costs around $50-$60.

UGH!!! I just got a new laptop today and I'm struggling to migrate Outlook to the new 'puter. It's not going well. Your post was very timely. While I'm doing it, I'm going to migrate to the Firefox email program at the same time- get me away from the Microsoft stuff....

I agree Roboform is a great tool to use. It is easily backed up anywhere you want too keep you passwords safe. I would be lost without that tool. There no doubt about that.
